Mental chatter, in most forms, is simply stories being projected into your mind like a movie, where the ego is the projectionist and puppet master.
Shades and gradations of ego abound; ego is not always obvious nor as black and white as it should seem.
And it seeks to infiltrate our lives in more ways than the obvious manifestations like bigheadedness, selfishness, or greed.
IDENTIFICATION WITH THOUGHT
One fascinating but dangerous — albeit abstract — dimension of ego is its sly propensity to hijack, distort, and, over time, realign our paradigms, thought patterns, and processing.
Hence how a once-cute newborn baby can grow up to become a kamikaze pilot.
Or terrorist. Or serial killer.
Distorted, perverted identification with emotion, feeling, and form.
Thought identification mixed with even minimal programming yields a good likelihood for the development of strongly-held beliefs, reinforced by and strung together by ego.
Identification with mental constructs + strong conditioning = an ideology
Ideologies can be “good” or “bad,” but they’re all egoic to some extent… all egoic mind-identifications. Not real. Not real.
Adherence to an ideology stems from a place of egoic wanting; development of — and commitment to — a value system is a byproduct of expansion of consciousness.
EGO IN OUR DAILY LIVES
How you create, contemplate, conceptualize, and even compartmentalize might also be shaped by ego.
During your day-to-day, such an influence is hardly noticeable.
You become so absorbed in your tumultuous to-do lists full of tedious tasks you have to get done in time that slow changes to your personality, disposition, and beliefs — plus accompanying, subtle shifts in your inclinations, tendencies, and assumptions about life — are barely perceptible. It’s not until consciously looking back over time that the mind-shift can be identified.
Ego will take from you if you let it. It’s a trickster. It’s relentless.
It will seep into vacant cracks, and fill them with stuff, with content. It’ll provide color commentary for your life story… if you let it.
It offers this content and commentary freely, as an explanation of sorts… for your circumstances, and for you to make sense of.
It asks probing questions and offers skewed solutions for you to find some surface-level understanding about why you are the way you are.
And it can be damn convincing.
Sometimes, even relevant.
Sometimes, even right.
If it’s right, it’s only on one level, or from one perspective. It does not know the totality.
Relevant, or right, though as it may be, it’s fleeting, limited, and ultimately unconscious.
It is unaware of the bigger picture which inevitably eludes it’s time-based, superficial perceptions, unceasing asking, and evolving explanation.
It takes careful, conscious recognition to snap out a certain train of thought and say “wait a minute, that right there, that was ego distorting how I want to be processing this concept. Let me try again.”
EGO ISN’T BAD
Ego is not bad either.
“Bad” itself, the very notion, is a judgment, a mental label.
And here you were, thinking, as you read, as I portrayed an image, maybe just below the surface of your awareness, about the ego in a negative light.
See how easy it is?
See how subtle its effect can be? How many times does that happen over the course of a day? A year?A lifetime?
It’s okay. That’s part of being human! The ego perceives life through the lens of duality, and you are intrinsically tied to your ego. Don’t fight that. Embrace it. Become aware.
Leverage it as a checkpoint, to keep you anchored in 3D.
To allow you to feel the spectrum of emotions. Give yourself the grace to be in, feel, and experience ego if you decide to. It’s a gift to enjoy it sometimes.
Fucking use your ego like it’s using you.
Not only is ego not bad, it is not stupid.
It knows “local you” very well — your weaknesses, imbalances, temptations. It is a master seducer, a legitimate psycho-spiritual con man.
Ego is not imaginative or original; but it is mildly clever and pretty conniving.
HOW EGO INVADES THE MIND
The most incessant, invasive, overarching way ego seeks to infiltrate your life is by recognizing then piggy backing off of a part of your soul contract or portion of your pre-birth plan being played out, and convincing you that the inverse of the exact lesson you are working through is the very thing(s) contributing to your own demise.
The soul is a master investor; ego is a ‘get rich quick’ guy. The real you is eternal; ego is time-based.
All of the lowest-vibrational states of being are also run by ego:
- Jealousy stems from your unconscious desire to attain status. You measured your sense of self-worth and equated your degree of self-love with the extent of your social standing, or your placement, or your popularity. This is due to the ego construct in action. And the ego loves to try to associate our perception of WHO WE ARE with whether or not we attained some thing, out there in the world.
- Fear is nothing more than the imagining of the coming to fruition of the ego’s story. When we allow it to thrive, it overcomes us and we uptake some position or create a reason which justifies our refusal to step into our life purpose… to fully embrace ourself for who we are.
- Depression is caused by a prolonged, distorted set of assumptions, beliefs, and feelings all generated by the ego mind whereby it has convinced us that our life is off track — that we have missed out on what could be, should be, or may have been… had we only made different choices.
Presence — solitude, reflection, inner work, and mind-observation — is the key to overcoming ego, which gives rise to the light of consciousness.
But be careful not to oppose ego. Do not resist it, merely recognize it. Learn to listen to it, and to your soul.
Where ego operates in mind, it’s only when getting “out of your mind” that you can hear the soul.
When you can observe thought but not identify with it, you realize who you are… the awareness behind it. Pure awareness.
Again, ego is NOT who you are — it is just a mental device associated with your being human. If we believe what our mind tells us then we identify with thought. When we identify with our thoughts — including all beliefs, labels, even feelings — we succumb to ego. You are not your mind, your thoughts, beliefs, words, actions, or any of it… even though it SEEMS like you are.
Don’t try to “kill your ego.” The ego can never really “die”; instead, it can be transcended and made conscious so that it’s no longer running your life.
Ego can be viewed as a gift, a mirror. A checks-and-balances system for the soul. A background commentator whose voice may seem poignant and part of who you are, but who’s truthfully powerless and meager in the face of consciousness.
It’s you vs. you.
Always has been.
